The Annex

The Annex is the area of the jail where work-release employees and Jail Industry workers are housed. Both of these groups are allowed to leave the premises for the work day and come back every night. The Annex offers much more freedom for inmates and is considered much more of a privelege. Employees who are offered a chance to live in the Annex are held to a high standard and any infraction (smuggling chewing tobacco, fighting, etc.) is likely to result in "being rolled up." Being rolled up refers to the act of an inmate actually rolling up a bag of their personal items to be transported back to "the blocks."

If you are fortunate enough to make it to the Annex you will not want to go back to The Blocks. The Annex is a small building located across the street from the regular jail. It has five large dorms which each house about 25 inmates. Each dorm has two showers, a washer and dryer (requiring quarters), two toilets (in a small, separate section) and two pay phones.

The Annex has a common area with a foosball table and a ping-pong table (generously donated by an ex-inmate). It also has a breakroom with vending machines and microwaves. You are allowed to have up to $20 in quarters at any given time. The vending machines offer a great alternative if the jail serves something you don't want. You can get noodles, frozen burritos, pizzas and more. The drink machines offer Pepsi products in 20 ounce plastic bottles.
