Sundance Cell Block

Rather than living in a large dorm with 15 or so other people (such as in Alta) you will actually only have one cellmate (usually refered to as a "cellie") in Sundance. Sundance has two different areas, also called Sundance 1 and Sundance 2. Each is a large dorm area with two stories of cells connected to it (with about ten cells on each story).

In Sundance you don't have all the commissary priveleges that you can expect in Solitude and Snowbird but it is the first chance that you will have to get commissary. This is nice because you can get pencils (never pens), stamps and envelopes. You will also receive mail for the first time and can have visitors come see you for the first time.

If you are a "short-timer" (in county Jail anybody doing less than 3 months or so is considered a short-timer), you may never make it out of Sundance. If you prefer cleanliness and just dealing with one cellmate than you may find that you like Sundance the best. There is a very small rec yard that you will have a chance to go hang out in once or twice a day (depending on weather, of course). Most inmates just work out or walk around in circles. The Utah County Jail does not provide any weight-training equipment to inmates.

The cells in Sundance are pretty simple - basically each cell has a bunk bed, a metal sink and a metal toilet. Considerate cell mates will wait until being "unracked" (let out of the cell and into the common area) to use the bathroom.

If this is your first time going to jail and you are worried about confrontation with other employees my advice to you is just to find a friend in Sundance and be careful not to offend anybody. Pretty much everybody goes through Sundance so the inmates have not been separated according to their crimes yet. As a result you have drug-users, violent offenders and sex offenders living in the same area. This can make for a tense atmosphere.

This is also the first area where inmates can be sent books. The easiest way to get books into the jail is to have your friends or family send books directly to the jail from any online retailer (ie, Amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, etc.) - see our guide on recommended books for Utah County Jail inmates. Remember that any books sent to you while incarcerated will become the property of the jail after you leave. As a result there are also several bookshelves throughout the jail filled with books. Unlike Alta, which mostly just has romance novels, you will find good books in Sundance, Snowbird and Solitude.
