Solitude Cell Block

Solitude is an interesting part of the jail. Solitude 1 is also refered to as "the hole," or solitary confinement. Usually you will not be sent to Solitude 1 (refered to by inmates as "sol-1") unless you do something pretty bad. In Solitude 1 you will have your own cell and you will be stuck in it for 23 hours a day. All of your meals are brought to your cell and you are only let out for an hour to use the phones and walk around. You typically are allowed to have books in your cell which helps pass the time - see our guide to receiving books in the Utah County Jail.

Usually you will not be allowed visitors while you are in the hole (as part of your punishment). The worst crimes in jail (smuggling, fighting, etc.) are typically punished with one month in the hole or less and you are likely to lose some good time if you are sent to Solitude 1.

Solitude 2 is meant to be a safe-haven for inmates who are considered "at risk" of any type of attack from other inmates. This includes sex offenders, snitches and anybody in PC (protective custody). If you are ever in fear of an attack in the jail you can tell a guard that you would like PC and you will probably be moved to Solitude 2.

One thing to keep in mind if you are going to jail is that regardless of how bad a crime is no crime is looked down upon by other inmates like sex offenses. Sex offenders are refered to as "mo's" (short for molester) by other inmates and the guards would constantly be dealing with problems if they didn't have a separate section to house sex offenders. Drug users will always make jokes about going to Solitude 2 because it is considered the sex offender dorm, though some guards have been known to send drug users to Solitude 2 as a punishment for doing something wrong.

The second next thing to being a sex offender in the Utah County Jail is being a "snitch." If you are telling guards what the inmates are doing when they aren't around you probably aren't going to do very well in jail. The best advice that I can give is to ignore what others around you are doing unless it poses a serious threat to somebody else. Snitches end up Solitude 2 but are in more danger than even sex offenders in other parts of the jail.

Solitude 2 is similar to Alta in that there is a large dorm with several inmates in it. Of course inmates in Solitude 1 have no priveleges (commissary, etc.) but in Solitude 2 you have full priveleges to order anything you want (there is an extended list of choices you can order). Solitude and Snowbird are also the only two cell blocks in "the blocks" which offer you access to a microwave which is nice since you can order Ramen noodles on commissary.
