Question: I know someone recently admitted to Jailhouse Industries. He called with a list of toiletries that he needed. Why aren't these provided to the inmates? He also said that we only had 48 hours to get them to him, why is this?

Jail Media: Inmates in Jail Industries can receive free shampoo and soap if they are indigent - the toiletries provided by the jail, however, aren't very good and given the opportunity to get real shampoo and soap is a treat. So most inmates in Jail Industries will try to get some real stuff rather than use the inferior products from the regular jail. JI inmates are allowed special priviledges because they are living in a special part of the jail called The Annex as opposed to The Blocks, which is the regular part of the jail.

When an inmate is first moved to the annex they have 48 hours to receive products from the outside - this is basically just to avoid the guards having to receive products all day everyday (since there are so many people there). The guards will search the products coming in to make sure nothing is being smuggled in. Usually JI inmates can also receive toiletries on Saturday though you will need to call first since the time each guard is willing to allow products coming in varies.

If you are bringing any liquids (shampoo, etc.) make sure they are clear - the guards will not generally allow cloudy liquids in because people have been known to smuggle things in by hiding them inside.
