Meals
The Utah County Jail will typically serve you three meals per day (inmates have been known to lose one meal a day for bad behavior). Breakfast is served about 6:30 in the morning. Typically this is just normal breakfast food - eggs, toast, fruit, waffles, etc. The favorite meal of most inmates is "biscuits and gravy" which is usually served only once per month.
Lunch and dinner are served at normal times (about noon and 6 pm) and hot dogs are very common. If you like hot dogs now you won't like them for long after serving some time in the Utah County Jail. The jail is fortunate enough to have a "garden" outside where inmates grow fresh fruits and vegetables which are common during the summer and fall - this is a very unique feature of the Utah County Jail.
Inmates refer to meals as "trays" and it is very common to bet trays while playing cards (though typically real money will be the stakes in the Annex). Be careful when playing for trays - you can quickly lose several meals if you don't know how to play Spades or Pinochle well. If you are preparing for your first visit to the jail you may want to learn each of these games - it will make it a bit easier to blend in during your stay.
Not everybody can handle eating jail food regularly and commissary gives you a chance to take a break from jail meals if you need to. If you are in Sundance, Snowbird, Solitude or the Annex you will have the chance to order commissary which you pay for with the money on your "books." If you are in Jail Industries you will earn money on your books, but otherwise you must have people come and add money to your account. A favorite inmate food is "Honey Buns," a large sticky pastry that costs less than a dollar.
