Booking
This is probably the only part of your "extended vacation" that will feel like the jail you have seen on television. First of all be prepared for booking to take several hours. They will take your picture (from the front and side, just like in the movies). They will also take your fingerprints although they probably already have them on file at this point since they typically take fingerprints during the investigation (in case you flee).
If you are being booked into the jail prior to your sentencing you may have an opportunity to pay bail and get out until sentencing. They will have phones available for you and ads will scatter the booking area for different bail bondsmen - all of them accept collect calls so you won't need money to call them.
During booking they will also categorize all of the major scars on your body or tattoos you may have. The idea is that if you reoffend and somebody can identify a few unique characteristics then they will have a better chance of catching you. They also watch inmates to make sure they are not giving each other tattoos in jail and by documenting existing tattoos they can keep an eye on new ones developing. Inmates tattooing each other, however, is not very common in the Utah County Jail.
You will also be asked during booking about any medical conditions. Be sure to explain all medical issues that you have dealt with, especially food allergies, etc. If you are a diabetic or hypoglycemic they will mark your records for your special diet at this time. If you do not tell the jail about any special conditions at this point (or medications you need) it will be much harder to get them later.
After all of the paperwork is completed you will change into standard jail issue clothing after a quick shower. They will inspect you to make sure you aren't smuggling anything in that doesn't belong in the jail.
You will now be escorted to Alta Cell Block.
