Bail
Bail is a commonly misunderstood concept. Let's say, for instance, that your bail is set at $10,000. Many people think that means you have to come up with $10,000 - you do not. This is what bail-bondsmen are for.
A bail-bondsmen is a lot like an insurance agent with a much different clientele. If your bail is set at $10,000 you usually will need to pay a bail-bondsman $1,000 and they will promise to pay the court the $10,000 in the account that you flee. If you don't flee the bondsman keeps you $1,000. If you do run, he will have to pay the court the $10,000. So as long as less than 10% of their clients flee they come out on top.
Fleeing the state before a trial is surprisingly uncommon - probably because even the most hardened of criminals know that the chances of not getting caught are miniscule. As a result most bail bondsmen make great money and in exchange they can get you out of jail with 10% of the cash you would need to do it yourself.
