Alta Cell Block

The first actual cell you will visit on a visit to the Utah County Jail is Alta (ironically named after a popular Utah ski resort, just like the other cell blocks). This is just a receiving area and you will typically be in this area for as little as 24 hours or as long as four days. Alta consists of a few large dorms with 6-8 bunk beds and a dining table (reminiscint of high school) in the middle. You will most likely be in Alta with 12-14 roommates. Keep in mind that many inmates are coming off of an extended meth binge and it is not uncommon to see people sleep for several days in a row, waking only for meals.

You will get 2 or 3 chances per day to leave the cell and hang out in an open common area. This area has several bookcases full of (for some unexplained reason) romance novels. There is also a television and several tables which inmates will play cards at. Since inmates in Alta have no commisary priveleges you will have to make your own playing cards out of pages of a book - a pretty daunting task.

The jail is surprisingly cool about showing movies on a jail-only channel so you can expect to keep up with recent releases, though you won't always have time to finish the movie before being "racked back in" to your cell.

This common area also has telephones available (click to read more about about telephone policies in the Utah County Jail) and in most cases this will be your first chance to call somebody on the outside.

From Alta you will be sent to one of three places (but most likely Sundance for a week or so):

Sundance Cell Block
Solitude Cell Block
Snowbird Cell Block
